This was supposed to be when North Texas was going to make its big push for the West title, but instead, it’s hanging on to hopes of bowl eligibility for dear life.

The passing game has been fine, but it hasn’t been dominant. The offense as a whole has been good, but it hasn’t been consistent. The problem has been a defense that can’t seem to come up with a key stop.

Even with all of the issues, with Rice and UAB left to play, win out, get a little luck with two Southern Miss losses and another Louisiana Tech loss, and the Mean Green are …

On the flip side, Louisiana Tech can’t clinch the West with a win – UAB is still in the mix – but it can come close.

The Bulldogs haven’t beaten anyone but Southern Miss, but they’re doing what they’re supposed to against bad teams. The passing game is solid, the offensive line has been great, and they’re going to show the offensive consistency that UNT won’t.

The Mean Green will throw well, but they won’t be able to keep up as Tech will control the tempo of the game throughout.

The race for the Western Division crown is heating up in the final stretch of the regular season and Saturday’s showdown between Conference USA divisional rivals Louisiana Tech (7-1, 4-0) and North Texas (4-5, 3-2) will play a big role.

With a win over the Mean Green, Tech could further supplant its leading position in the West as it would earn another tiebreaker against a squad that’s still in the running for the top spot. A victory for North Texas would hand the Bulldogs their first conference loss and make the scene much tighter for the division race.

UNT will enter Joe Aillet Stadium will a great sense of urgency as it needs wins in two of its final three regular season games to reach bowl eligibility, something Louisiana Tech achieved three weeks ago with its 45-30 win over Southern Miss.

North Texas (4-5, 3-2 C-USA West) needs two wins in its final three games to be bowl eligible and potentially make a fourth straight bowl appearance. The Mean Green picked up a key and needed a win in that quest last Saturday with a 52-26 rout of UTEP.
Mason Fine arguably won the weekend in all of college football with his in-game and post-game performance. Fine threw a career-high seven touchdown passes and finished with 332 yards while completing 24 of 39 passes, then became a viral sensation for doing his post-game press conference in a dinosaur costume.

I was proud of him,” coach Seth Littrell told the Denton Record-Chronicle about Fine showing a lighter side. “College football is a year-round job and is a grind. If you don’t enjoy it and have some laughs, it can be even more of a grind. It showed his personality. He likes to have fun.”

Fine clearly does not have a short arm as he also surpassed 12,000 passing yards in last weekend's victory. He is seventh in the nation with 2,609 yards and tied for third with 27 TD passes. Fine is four scoring tosses shy of matching his single-season career-high of 31 set last season and nine short of becoming the 26th player in FBS history with 100.

Tre Siggers, who leads North Texas with 713 rushing yards, could be more of a workhorse in this game with DeAndre Torrey doubtful. The Mean Green have been hit hard by injuries this season, losing starting wide receiver Rico Bussey and left tackle D'Andre Plantin earlier in the campaign.

The Mean Green's defense leaves plenty to be desired. They rank 105th in scoring defense at 32.4 points per game and have held only one opponent under 23 points. North Texas is yielding 416.8 yards per game, including 300.7 per contest through the air.

Marshall vs Rice
Date: Saturday, November 2nd
Game Time: 3:30 ET
Venue: Rice Stadium, Houston, TX
Network: Facebook Stream

The Marshall Thundering Herd head into Houston, TX for a battle with the Rice Owls on Saturday after a big win against Western Kentucky last week.  Kicker Justin Rohrwasser kicked a 53 yard field goal as time expired to give the Thundering Herd the win, 26-23.  Quarterback Isaiah Green had a decent day throwing the ball, completing 20 of 31 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown.  Green also ran 7 times for 12 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Broc Thompson recorded 3 catches for 91 yards and Armani Levias caught 10 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.  Running back Brenden Knox ran the ball 19 times for 84 yards and was Marshall’s leading rusher.  The Marshall defense allowed 401 total yards in the game, but it was just enough to beat Western Kentucky.

On the year, Marshall is 5-3 and 3-1 in conference play.  Isaiah Green has now thrown for 1,607 yards, 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.  Brendan Knox has been a force on the ground with 137 carries for 803 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Armani Levias has been the most productive wide receiver and has 32 receptions for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season.  Marshall has scored 27 points per game this season and is giving up 26.1 points per game.

Rice welcomes Marshall to their campus after losing their last game 20-6 to Southern Miss in a game where Rice’s only points of the game didn’t come until the 3rd quarter.  Quarterback Wiley Green completed just 12 of 26 passes for 104 yards, a touchdown and an interception and was simply shut down by the Southern Miss defense the whole game.  Sophomore quarterback Evan Marshman also saw action in the game, but didn’t do much better than Green.  Marshman completed 2 of his 5 passes attempts for 27 yards.  Running back Charlie Booker was also never able to get started as he carried the ball 10 times for just 28 yards.  Green’s touchdown pass was caught by wide out Austin Trammell who led Rice in receiving on the game making 5 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.  If there is a silver lining to this game for Rice, it is the fact that their defense wasn’t terrible.  Although Southern Miss gained 364 yards, holding them to 20 points can be considered an accomplishment since they are averaging just over 29 points a game on the season.

Marshall got the win it had to have, and now it can’t blow the layup. It took down WKU last week to take the lead in the division race, but it still has Louisiana Tech next, a date at Charlotte, and FIU to close things out. This has to be a bit of a week off against a Rice team that’s not able to get anything going.

The winless Owls aren’t doing anything offensively – scoring 20 points or fewer in every game but the 31-27 loss to UTSA – with one of the nation’s least-effective offenses, not enough of a passing game, too many turnovers, and too many missed opportunities. However, they’re able to slow games down just enough to keep them close.

Marshall’s offensive line is playing too well. There’s a good enough running game to control the game, the pass rush is solid, and it doesn’t take too many points to put away this Rice team. The Herd will come up with two early scoring drives and coast from there.

With the loss, Rice drops to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.  To make matters worse, the Thundering Herd come into town playing some of their best football of the year.  On the year quarterback Wiley Green has thrown for 787 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Rice’s leading rusher on the year is Aston Walter, who has ran 110 times for 504 yards and 5 touchdowns, however, he is listed as doubtful for the game on Saturday. Austin Trammell is Rice’s is leading receiver as he has caught 42 passes for 524 yards and 2 touchdowns. Coming into Saturday's game Rice has scored an average of 15.9 points per game while allowing 29.1 points per game.

For my pick in this game, I have to go with Marshall and unfortunately for Rice, that means they will remain winless on the year.  The Rice offense simply isn’t good enough and will be taken down by the Thundering Herd defense.  Although Marshall is averaging giving up 389 yards per game this season, Rice only averages 277.9 per game so it will be a big opportunity for Marshall to bring that number down. Marshall wins this one 35-14 and covers the spread.
